Singer, songwriter, and clawhammer banjo player Abigail Washburn loves Chinese music and culture as well as American old-time music. Her first CD, Song of the Traveling Daughter, was bilingual; with the Sparrow Quartet she has toured China and Tibet. At Sichuan University Art School, she taught traditional US music and later contributed to Sichuan earthquake relief efforts with a project called Afterquake. “Her music puts theory into practice, absorbing and reconfiguring old sounds and recasting them as enthralling vehicles that speak to the dislocation and unexpected juxtapositions of contemporary life” (NY Times). Her CD City of Refuge testifies to her creative reach beyond classic old-time into more expansive territory. More about Abigail Sponsored by Women of Lotus; Friends of Old-Time and Celtic Music
