Bomba Estéreo emerged in 2005 from the rich underground electronic scene of Bogota, Colombia. Leader Simón Mejía recruited fierce singer Liliana Saumet, and the band is known for its explosive dance fusion of electronic dub and hip-hop, mixed with Colombian rhythms like cumbia and champeta. The influence of Afro-Colombian rhythms and coastal sounds is also front and center. “We are exploring the tradition, but in our independent way,” says Mejía. “We want to break through the frontiers. Our idea is to take our music to the whole world” (NY Times). Sponsored by Women of Lotus; IU Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies
