What’s a puzzle trail? Get this basics in three minutes— In early August, Lotus grad intern Lizzie Plant, husband David, and dog Bingo struck out to explore a puzzle trail and check out some of the public art in downtown Bloomington, Indiana:
Designed by Studio Cypher (and presented by BEAD, Bloomington’s Entertainment and Arts District), this trail was the first of two interactive, “real world” puzzle experiences created especially for this year’s Lotus World Music and Arts Festival.
During the festival, teams of up to three people can compete for points and a prize with another, longer version. It’s just $5, and you can pre-register to get a jump on your competition. Details here.
If the notion of a “puzzle trail” has you puzzled, here are a few tips and explanations:
- It’s a little like parcours, the athletic, urban obstacle-course runs you’ve probably seen on YouTube. But without, you know, all the running, jumping, acrobatics, and leaping from building to building.
- Says Studio Cypher puzzle designer Ian Pottmeyer, “The clues are mysterious up to the point that you’re there. And then they’re obvious.” Ian’s colleague at SC agrees: “We’re hoping to create a lot of ‘A-ha!’ moments.”

- Although you can use GPS with a handy smartphone or other device, the only tools you really need are your powers of observation. And a writing implement or two. And your puzzle tour card, of course.
- Work with a friend (or two).
- Don’t worry about doing it all in one go.
- Enjoy the experience. By the end, you’ll know more about Bloomington, and you’ll see stuff you’ve never noticed before (guaranteed).
