“Puppets and masks should be played in the street. They are louder than the traffic. They don’t teach problems, but they scream and dance and display life in its clearest terms. Puppet theater is of action rather than dialogue” (Peter Schumann). Founded in 1963 by Peter Schumann on New York City’s Lower East Side, Bread and Puppet Theater is now based in Vermont. One of the oldest, nonprofit, political theater companies in the US, it tours around the world, with traveling puppet shows that range from tightly composed theater pieces presented by members of the company to extensive outdoor pageants which require the participation of many volunteers.
