Volunteer Profile: Andy Qualls

How did you first hear about the Lotus organization
Promotional material for the Festival.

What initially inspired you to volunteer for our organization?
I thought it was so cool that such a broadly diverse world music event was happening in my hometown and was excited to learn that I could be part of it and so I volunteered.

What volunteer jobs have you performed?
Photography, set-up, essential services (volunteer check-in), venues.

Which volunteer experiences have you most enjoyed?  Why?
Photography. I get to see most of the acts at the Festival, as well as numerous other events. Very rewarding / heart-warming to see so many people enjoying the music, themselves, and other patrons—as well as the appreciation of the artists for the local audiences.  And I get to meet so many of the volunteers and learn why they want to participate.

How would you describe to a friend why they should attend or volunteer for the Lotus Festival?
Great community event and you get a great sense of engagement / involvement with it. Meet lots of people who are similarly interested. Get to hear music, of exceptional quality, in intimate settings, of so many cultural backgrounds. And so we all have a better idea of people all across the world in a setting that promotes understanding and appreciation of each other.

What is your favorite Lotus moment (favorite band, street scene, etc)?

  1. Jake Shimabukuro
  2. The Once
  3. Young people busking in front of the Buskirk-Chumley Theater
  4. Taking a picture of Ted and Louis sitting together
